About the John Locke Institute

Our Vision

The John Locke Institute is an independent educational organization dedicated to encouraging the brightest and most talented students to aim higher academically and to be intellectually adventurous.

Through a variety of programs—including residential courses, revision seminars, essay competitions, and special events—we inspire students to set ambitious goals and equip them with the skills necessary to achieve them.

Who Was John Locke?

The Institute is named after the 17th-century Oxford philosopher John Locke.

Locke’s influence spans both his native Britain and the United States, and he is widely regarded as the father of classical liberalism. A philosopher, political theorist, economist, and physician, Locke embodied the Renaissance ideal of a thinker and a doer.

We honor his philosophy of education: a teacher’s role is not merely to impart all that is knowable, but to cultivate a love and respect for knowledge in the student, and to guide them toward self-understanding and improvement.

What We Do

Inspired by John Locke’s principles, the Institute offers courses in Philosophy, Politics, Economics, History, Psychology, and Law, designed to introduce students to new ideas and challenge conventional thinking.

We focus on developing independent thought, fostering reasoning skills, and cultivating critical and analytical thinking. Most importantly, we aim to instill a lifelong love of learning in our students.

Inspiring a Love of Learning

Most of our courses include personalized tutoring, small seminars, and informal collaboration with peers. Learning is active: students read, debate, listen, discuss, deliver presentations, write, and, most importantly, think deeply.

We guide students to explore what they do not yet know, challenge their assumptions, and test what they think they already know. Our interdisciplinary curriculum, particularly in Philosophy, Politics, Economics, and History, uses the methods and materials of each subject to illuminate others.

While we aim to deepen students’ knowledge, our primary goal is to teach students how to question, reason logically, express ideas clearly and persuasively, and approach intellectual challenges with humility, enabling them to learn from those with different perspectives.

Cultivating Ambition

We also seek to nurture academic ambition. Our alumni have gone on to study at Oxford, Cambridge, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Chicago, and Berkeley.

We strive to make learning stimulating, rewarding, and enjoyable. As John Locke might have approved:

“When properly arranged, learning can be the entertainment of the mind, just as play is the exercise of the body.”
