About us
Who we are

An independent home for John Locke essay coaching

We are an independent coaching service for students preparing for the John Locke Essay Competition. We are not affiliated with or operated by the official John Locke Institute — our role is to help ambitious students do their best, original work for it.

Our mentors are educators from leading universities with a track record across John Locke and other international essay competitions. We work one-on-one, across all ten disciplines, from a first idea through to the shortlist and interview.

What we believe

Original thought, properly defended

i.

The student’s own voice

We coach you to find and sharpen your argument — never to write it for you. Every essay must be genuinely your own.

ii.

Depth over breadth

The best essays commit to one idea and pursue it rigorously. We help you go deep, not wide.

iii.

Skills that outlast the prize

Research, argument and academic writing are exactly what selective universities reward — long after the result.

The namesake

Who was John Locke?

The competition is named after the 17th-century Oxford philosopher John Locke (1632–1704) — widely regarded as the father of classical liberalism. A philosopher, political theorist, economist and physician, Locke’s influence spans both Britain and the United States.

His view of education — that a teacher’s task is not merely to impart what is known, but to cultivate independent, adventurous thinking — is exactly the spirit the essay prize rewards, and the spirit we coach toward.

How we work

A genuine working relationship, not a template

Matched, then sustained

You work with one specialist mentor across the season — they get to know your thinking and your voice.

Draft by draft

Progress comes from revision. We give honest, specific feedback and expect your best each round.

Built for the interview

Because shortlisted candidates defend their essay live, everything we do keeps the work — and the thinking — yours.

Our standards

Where we draw the line

We coach you to do excellent, original work — we never write or co-author essays, and we never use AI to generate them. That commitment is detailed on our Academic Integrity page, and it’s the reason our students can stand behind every sentence they submit.
