For students participating in the 2026 John Locke Writing Competition, please note that this year’s schedule has been moved forward overall. The regular submission deadline has already passed. If you have not yet submitted your essay, you will need to opt for the late submission option.
- Late Submission Deadline 1: June 7, 2026 (Late fee: $35)
- Late Submission Deadline 2: June 21, 2026 (Late fee: $100)
(Please avoid submitting at the very last minute to prevent potential system instability and submission failures.)
01 Does Late Submission Affect Award Judging?
Recently, many parents have inquired whether submitting a John Locke essay late will negatively impact the judging process.
The official stance is clear: No, it will not.
As stated in the official FAQ, purchasing the late submission option does not affect the scoring of your paper. Therefore, submitting late will not result in any point deductions. What truly determines the outcome remains the quality of the essay itself, including the argumentation, originality, structure, use of evidence, and writing expression tailored to the John Locke prompts.
02 John Locke Competition Award Structure
Once your essay is successfully submitted, the next step is awaiting the results. Rumors suggest that submissions for this year’s competition exceeded 100,000, nearly doubling compared to previous years, indicating visibly fierce competition. So, how are the John Locke awards structured? Particularly, with the Senior and Junior categories sharing the same prompts this year, how does it impact the judging?
Grand Prize
Awarded to only one candidate globally. The recipient will receive the prestigious John Locke Institute Junior Scholarship, valued at $10,000, to attend one or more summer schools and/or courses at the John Locke Institute.
Subject Category Prizes
One set of prizes per subject category (e.g., Economics First, Second, and Third Prizes).
The top three awards in each category are designated as Winner (First Prize), Second Prize, and Third Prize.
Commendation Awards
- Very High Commendation: Award rate is approximately 1%
- High Commendation: Award rate is approximately 5%
- Commendation: Award rate is approximately 10%–12%
Recognition Award
Recognition is awarded to shortlisted candidates who do not receive other awards. The award rate was 18.65% for the 2025 season.
Is It Difficult for Junior Category Students to Win Awards?
The Junior category does not have independent prompts this year. It shares all 30 prompts with the Senior category. However, the judging panels are separate, and the top three awards are allocated independently for the Junior group. The judging criteria for the Junior category are actually relatively more lenient. For essays of the same quality, Junior participants have a higher probability of winning awards.
- Senior Category: Open to students under 19 years old
- Junior Category: Restricted to students under 15 years old
